Our arrival here in Portland was at an all time low for us. Nothing but up from here- right?
Because of a very strong union presence it made since for me to try to break in. My opportunity came in late 1995 when the local Steam Fitters Union was openly looking for new members because a shortage of HVAC mechanics. Ultimately I was able to buy my way in without an apprenticeship- providing I could prove myself by practical performance on the job and passing an exam. Needless to say I was way over my head, but what did I have to loose?
So.. I worked by day and studied by night. Because of my "nothing to loose" attitude I was not afraid to "push the button" as it were. I fourtunatly avoided expensive ($30,000) mistakes like happened to some along the way and eventually made the grade! What a difference from my work in California!
Some have a corner office--
I have a office that corners!
I'm currently Alliant's Controls Manager.
